Golf trophy ensures that John Duggan’s memory lives on

The John Duggan Memorial Cup is something that ensures the legacy of a most popular Portlaoise man, teacher and sportsman will live on.
John Duggan, who was a teacher in St Mary’s CBS, passed away in 2021 and subsequently the past pupils union inaugurated the John Duggan Cup to be played for at their annual golf outing.

John played a central role in the coaching of teams in the CBS and Portlaoise GAA club, where he also played. His other great sporting love was golf and subsequently the past pupils union thought this competition would be a great way to remember him.
The year’s event, organised by Kevin Sheehan and Mark Keenan was held The Heritage Golf resort in Killenard.
An amazing 124 golfers, representing 17 different golf clubs from across the country, played with the aim of getting their name on the much sought after cup while also remembering the very popular John Duggan.

The winner for 2025 Paddy Dalton who was presented with the cup by Society Captain, Stan Walsh Commenting after the presentation Dalton said ‘he was over the moon with the win’.
He went on to add: “It’s an honour to have won this cup as there was so many playing and it was great to win it on a championship course like the Heritage.”
