IFC Quarter-Final Preview: Two semi-final places up for grabs

.

THE knockout stages of the Laois Shopping Centre Intermediate Football Championship begin tonight with two intriguing quarter-final ties. In Ratheniska, Annanough and Kilcavan renew a rivalry that has already produced some tight encounters this year, while Ballyroan Abbey and Ballylinan meet in what promises to be a fascinating clash of contrasting ambitions.

Annanough v Kilcavan

This looks the most evenly matched contest of the evening. Both clubs have emerged from the junior ranks in recent seasons, with Annanough crowned Junior A champions in 2023 and Kilcavan following suit in 2024. Both have adapted well to intermediate football and will see a semi-final berth as a realistic target.

Kilcavan enter the game with slightly more championship experience at this level. Liam Lonergan's side reached the IFC semi-finals last year and have again shown signs of progress in 2026, qualifying for the knockout stages after victories over Ballyroan Abbey and Ballyfin.

Annanough, meanwhile, have built a reputation for being extremely difficult to break down. Their physicality, work rate and organisation have made them a formidable opponent.

The sides know each other well and there is unlikely to be much between them. Expect a tense, hard-fought affair where scores will be at a premium. If Kilcavan can get quality ball into their attacking threats, their experience at this stage may prove decisive.

Expect a Kilcavan win by the narrowest of margins.

Ballyroan Abbey v Ballylinan

This tie pitches one of the championship's established intermediate clubs against one of the competition's newest arrivals.

Ballylinan have been operating at intermediate level for several seasons and possess players accustomed to championship football deep into August. Their blend of experience and attacking quality makes them a dangerous proposition for any side in the competition.

Ballyroan Abbey's second team, meanwhile, are back at intermediate level after winning last year's Junior Football Championship. Their return to the grade has been a learning curve but they have shown enough throughout the year to suggest they belong at this level Interestingly, Kilcavan defeated Ballyroan Abbey in the opening round, while Ballylinan have generally looked more comfortable against intermediate opposition throughout the season. That extra experience in tight championship matches could be significant when the pressure comes on tonight.

Ballyroan Abbey will relish the underdog tag and have nothing to lose, but Ballylinan appear to have the stronger overall squad and should fancy their chances of progressing.

Expect Ballylinan to advance, though Ballyroan Abbey are capable of making it uncomfortable.
