Portlaoise Court: Man ‘drank his head off’ after sneaking into Electric Picnic

Portlaoise Courthouse

A MAN who “drank his head off” after sneaking into last year’s Electric Picnic in Stradbally ended up before Judge Andrew Cody in Portlaoise District Court last week on a public order offence.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby told the court that at 8.30pm on the first night of the festival on 16 August, a man who was in a very drunken state was brought to the eviction tent on the site.

Arising from the incident, Gary Murphy, 17 Egmont Place, Churchtown, Mallow, Co Cork pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place.

Sgt Kirby said: “I remember him at the Picnic. When he sobered up he was grand.”

“So,” said Judge Cody to Mr Murphy, “you got in through a fence without paying and drank you head off, is that it?” In reply, the defendant said: “pretty much.”

The judge went on to fine Mr Murphy €300.
