Strongbow Archers in Portarlington is among the groups that will receive Age & Opportunity funding

MORE than 20 Laois groups will share almost €6,500 in physical activity funding for older people.

Men’s and women’s sheds, ICA guilds and an archery club are among the local organisations that will receive funding, under the Age & Opportunity active national grant scheme.

While the grants are small, averaging €300 each, every little helps and will support a range of activities across the county, with 21 local groups sharing €6,490 announced on 18 April.

The successful Laois groups are: 50 + Active Age Group; Portlaoise Active Retired; Abbeyleix and District Men's Shed; Abbeyleix Day Care; Ballyfin Vintage Club; Ballylinan Community Alert; Ballyroan Community Hall; Castletown ICA Guild; Happy Hearts; Portarlington Active Retired, The Heath Active Retired/The Heath GAA Health And Wellbeing; Irish Country Roads and Culture Trails; Killenard Active Retired; Knock GAA; Laois Sport Partnership; Mná le Chéile; Mountmellick ICA; Muiriosa Foundation; Portarlington Women’s Shed; Spink ICA; Strongbow Archers; SVT Activity and Wellness Hub and Timahoe Community Hall.

Just under €8m nationwide has been awarded to date by the scheme, with 988 grants totalling €300,000 awarded this year.

The funding aims to increase participation in recreational sports by older people, bringing significant physical and mental health benefits. The grant scheme is part of Age & Opportunity’s active programme, funded by Sport Ireland and delivered nationwide with the support of the HSE and local Sports Partnerships.
