PROPERTY prices in Laois have soared by more than 22% since last year, making the county the most expensive place in the midlands to buy a home.

Laois also recorded the highest number of house sales in the midlands during the first quarter of this year, according to the latest national Geowox Housing Report.

Portlaoise is the most expensive town in the midlands to buy a house after a massive increase of over 30%, from €250,000 in the first quarter of last year to €328,000 during the same period this year.

Tullamore had the smallest increase of just 4.6% to €250,000, while the average house price in Mullingar is €303,000, up by 7.9%.

The report says that the average price of a house in Laois has risen to €300,000, a 22.4% increase compared to the first three months of last year. This compares with an average of €270,000 in Offaly, up 13.4%, and €290,000 in Westmeath, up 16.9%.

Laois had the highest number of property of sales at 227 in the first three months of this year, a 16.4% increase on the same time last year. Offaly sales went down by over 16% to 177, while Westmeath went up by just over 8% to 148 sales.
