New 1,000 student secondary school in Portlaoise nearing development

The location for the proposed LOETB 1,000 student secondary school in Portlaoise on lands at Downes, Borris Little and Mellick, just off the O'Dowling roundabout.
THE Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) has formally put Laois County Council on notice of its intention to seek planning permission to construct a 1,000 pupil secondary school in Portlaoise.
The development is on lands at Downes, Borris Little and Mellick in Portlaoise.
According to the LOETB the development will consist of the construction of part two storey and part three storey secondary school to include general classrooms, specialist classrooms, a general-purpose hall, PE hall, offices, staff room, library, sanitary facilities and ancillary spaces.
The LOETB said that should approval be given the development will include the provision a new site entrance from O’Dowling roundabout on the Portlaoise South Orbital Route leading to a new car and bus set down/drop off area with 49 carparking spaces and with pedestrian and cycle route to the proposed school.
It also said that it proposes a new site entrance from the adjoining Timahoe/Well Road with an access road for cycle and footpaths, bicycle spaces and 92 car parking space.
A new footpath on the Timahoe/Well Road is also proposed connecting it to the existing proposed new Hockey pitch with associated fencing, shelter dugouts and eight flood lighting standards, six ball courts, landscaped gardens and an external social space.
