Talented Laois students reach world finals of Junk Kouture

Áine Carter, Kaylah O'Mara and Elaine Miller celebrate their stunning success
THREE talented Laois schoolgirls have won a coveted place in the 2025 Junk Kouture World Finals, with a stunning creation crafted from salt bags and metal packaging.
The trio from Heywood Community School in Ballinakill wowed judges with their standout ensemble titled 'Saline Queen', securing a spot among the top ten Irish entries to advance to the global stage.
Designed by Áine Carter, Kaylah O'Mara and Elaine Miller, the dress captivated adjudicators at the Dublin City Final of the renowned international competition.
A striking example of sustainable fashion, Saline Queen is made entirely from metal packaging and salt bags and draws inspiration from the ongoing battle against plastic pollution, particularly its impact on marine environments.
The Heywood teenagers said the name reflects both the saline solution and the oceanic theme, underscoring their commitment to environmental awareness.
Their delighted art teacher Sharon Webster said: “I am absolutely bursting with pride for Áine, Kaylah and Elaine. The dedication, creativity and teamwork they’ve shown throughout this journey has been nothing short of inspiring. Every stitch and detail in their design reflects months of hard work and passion and they truly deserve this incredible achievement. I couldn’t be prouder to see their talent recognised on a global stage.”
The Dublin final held at The Helix showcased 60 innovative designs from schools across Ireland, all emphasising creativity and sustainability. Saline Queen stood out for its compelling message and innovative use of materials, earning its designers a place in the World Finals alongside teams from the UK, USA, France, Italy and the UAE.
The Junk Kouture World Finals will be broadcast on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player on Monday 19 May at 7pm, offering viewers a chance to witness the creativity and passion of young designers committed to sustainable fashion.
The judges said: ‘Congratulations to Áine, Kaylah, and Elaine on their remarkable achievement and for shining a spotlight on the power of youth-driven innovation in addressing global environmental challenges.’
